Grand Rounds | The Price of the White Coat: Suicide Among Physicians and Medical Trainees
The rate of suicide among health professionals is higher than for the general population. The COVID-19 pandemic has only worsened the stressors negatively affecting health professionals. In this talk, Viktoriya Karakcheyeva, MD, MS, NCC, LCPC, LCADS, Behavioral Services Director, GW Resiliency & Well-being Center, will cover suicide epidemiology, facts on physician and medical trainee suicide, suicide risks and protective factors, suicide assessment basics, and what you can do to help a colleague.

Dr. Karakcheyeva has been in clinical practice for two decades with a mission of providing evidence-based therapeutic approaches to address complex life challenges and transitions, including addiction and trauma. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Dnipropetrovsk National Medical Academy in Ukraine with a focus in psychiatry. She received her training in Psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Salzburg, Austria. She also holds a master’s degree in counseling from Loyola University Maryland.

Objectives:

1. Become aware of the unique factors that put physicians at the increased risk for suicide.
2. Learn how to ask tough questions about suicide if you are worried about a physician colleague.
3. Know where to get additional help and resources for crisis support.
